When you feel too much

Emotional intensity · Reflection

Some feelings arrive with a force that takes over the whole body.

There can be heat, pressure, tears, anger, panic, shaking, urgency, or the sense that everything is happening at once.

When feeling becomes intense, the body may search for safety. It may want distance, reassurance, control, movement, silence, contact, or escape.

Therapy can create a slower space around intensity. Together, we can notice what happens in the body, what the feeling may be protecting, and what support is needed in that moment.

Emotional intensity is often a signal. It may speak of overwhelm, unmet needs, old pain, sensory pressure, grief, fear, exhaustion or a longing to be understood.

With care, intensity can become something we listen to and give a place to be held.

You may gently notice:

  • Where do I feel intensity in my body?
  • What usually happens next when I feel too much?
  • What kind of support helps my body settle?
  • What might this feeling be asking me to notice?
