Reflections from Eman

When you feel nothing

Numbness · Reflection

Sometimes the difficulty is the absence of feeling.

There may be blankness, distance, tiredness, flatness, fog, or a sense of watching life from far away.

Numbness can be confusing. People may judge themselves for feeling empty, disconnected, cold, or unable to respond in the way they expected.

The body can protect itself through distance. Numbness can be a way of surviving pressure, grief, fear, repeated stress or emotional overload.

Therapy can help approach numbness gently. We can notice the edges of it, the conditions around it, and the small signs of life that may still be present.

A quiet body still carries meaning. We can listen carefully and slowly.

You may gently notice:

  • When do I notice numbness most clearly?
  • What happens around me before I disconnect?
  • What small signal tells me I am still here?
  • What kind of pace feels safe enough today?
